Power cuts and crime are not a good combination |

As someone who watches and reads the International media more than most it has struck me over the past few days just how concerned the international community are with current events. As I travel across the world almost every national television news and national newspaper is covering the outages in some detail with many now making the link between them and the 2010 World Cup which isn't that long away. Only last month most of the media was concerned with the crime situation, now its power cuts and the two are not a good combination when it comes to SA improving its image internationally. As you can see from this very website lots of the Financial press are beginning to calculate the cost to the economy, particularly the mining industry. This comes at a time when a report out of Tokyo says that China produced more Gold than South Africa in 2007, knocking SA off the top spot for the first time in 101 years. South African production was down 8% on the year before.

The Selebi affair has done nothing for the image of South Africa abroad. On my travels recently I was constantly reminded about not the good things associated with South Africa but the negative aspects, Zuma and Selebi. I am delighted that forums such as IMFSA are now taking place which give South Africans the chance to learn from International experts about how best to promote what is going on. We

The whole subject, the way Africa and in particular South Africa is covered in the International media, is now something I care passionately about and consumes all of my time right now.
